The End of Fossil Fuels: Back to the pack horse, or is there another way?

There are few available alternatives to the internal combustion engine and though there are many viable fuel options, only petrol, diesel and liquid petroleum gas are generally available. Since the sixties, automotive manufacturers and independent engineers have developed and tested prototype alternate fuels, many with really encouraging results. One alternative, hydrogen, has gained some stock reasons for its failure to gain support and acceptance. When the automotive industry were active in testing this fuel, tests were similarly carried out with liquid petroleum gas (LPG). This fuel also had no bulk distribution network and was also more volatile than petrol. For...

Doctors backed away from a controversial proposal to designate video game addiction as a mental disorder akin to alcoholism, saying psychiatrists should study the issue more. Addiction experts also strongly opposed the idea at a debate at the American Medical Association’s annual meeting. They said more study is needed before excessive use of video and online games — a problem that affects about 10% of players — could be considered...

Solar Thermal Energy Plant

Nevada Solar One is Nevada's first solar power plant and is located a few miles outside if Las Vegas. It is designed on solar thermal principles as opposed to photovoltaics. Solar energy can be produced in a number of ways. There is the familiar solar panel - they are becoming increasingly common as they become more and more affordable. Solar panels produce solar energy through the process called photovoltaics: the rays of the Sun hit the silicon crystals in the panel thus inducing a flow of electrons. Another way to extract energy form sunlight is the solar thermal process.   Solar...

Solar Energy Advantages And Disadvantages

Solar energy can be collected in two main ways – either by heating water (Solar Thermal) or by converting light into electricity (Solar Photovoltaics). Here follows a brief run down of the main advantages and disadvantages of solar energy as a green energy source encompassing both solar thermal and solar photovoltaics. Advantages Solar energy is free. There is an initial capital cost but once you have made the investment the energy harvested from the sun costs you nothing. No one will be sending you a bill for sunshine. Solar energy is abundant. Even in mid winter we are blessed with...
